Licensed Master Social Worker

Ellie Van Dam

Ellie is a Licensed Master Social Worker serving West Des Moines, Iowa, and surrounding areas. Ellie believes that challenges in life provide a unique opportunity for positive change, growth, and enlightenment. She uses Motivational Interviewing (MI) to assist her clients with finding their strengths and evoking positive change if that is the goal. Ellie has personal and professional experience with domestic violence and substance use disorders. She provides a safe non-judgmental and therapeutic environment to share and heal by using empathy and understanding. Ellie serves adult individuals, adolescents, and has a special interest in working with families struggling with substance use disorders. Ellie is also trained in EMDR Therapy.

Ellie earned a Master of Social Work (2020) from the University of Iowa. Prior to graduating Ellie provided substance use disorder assessments to diverse populations, worked with at-risk youth, and volunteered as a domestic violence crisis advocate. Ellie chooses to focus on healing trauma and working toward behavior change by using Trauma Informed Care models and Motivational Interviewing. She often relies on the Existential psychotherapy model to guide her practice which focuses on the human experience as a whole. Ellie understands that addiction is difficult on families and utilizes the Structural Family Therapy model to assist with communication patterns and healthy boundary making.

Outside of work you can find Ellie spending time with family and her pit bull BabyGurl. She was born and raised in Iowa and enjoys being outside and exploring the woods. Ellie would rather swim in a lake than the ocean. She likes camping, cooking, and binge watching Netflix. Ellie values being home, resetting and relaxing.

Ellie is currently accepting new patients and accepts Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, Iowa Total Care, UHC/Optum, Amerigroup and private pay clients.
